Botanical Illustration - Natural history

Study natural objects and paint them in watercolour, concentrating on observation and accuracy to produce magnificent studies of richly coloured and beautifully composed paintings. A challenging but deeply relaxing way to spend a Monday morning. The gentle but enthusiastic tutor will guide you along the way.

Course aim

A watercolour painting course examining Natural History and Wildlife subjects that are found in Winter.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • An interest in learning more about the Natural World through recording it.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Compose a painting with confidence.
  • Apply an array of watercolours .
  • Relax into the realms of close observation.
  • Learn from a group of like-minded painters.
  • Demonstrate knowledge about the world of Botanical Painting.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • The tutor will contact you and advise what materials you will need.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • You could join in the group's exhibition to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the Mayflower.
