A practical course that will engage participants in the management of local habitats. Each week we will go to a local nature reserve and assist, using hand tools, with the management of projects to enhance the habitat, specifically for the animals and plants that are found there. You will learn about the life of endangered species, and the positive impact that habitat management can have on their survival.

Course aim

To provide a brief introduction to various habitats in the local countryside, and the life cycles of the species of flora and fauna that reside there. Introduce participants to practical management of the habitats using hand tools.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Recognise different local habitats and understand why management of these habitats is necessary
  • Name some of the endangered species that live in local habitats
  • Work in the outside environment using hand tools
  • Understand the work of the Wellcome Trust.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • Working in a group and in an environment where support within the team is high. Experiencing the countryside or those who simply wish to increase their levels of fitness by regular working outdoors.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • You will be encouraged to work together with your fellow students and tutor. You will be asked to share your ideas and views and work with the group to give and accept feedback in a supportive environment.

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • You will need clothing suitable for a day outdoors including a hat, scarf, gloves. Boots or sturdy shoes, waterproof coat, waterproof leggings. Small rucksack to carry lunch. Packed lunch and drink - 1L water in hot weather.
