Where do cuckoos go in the winter? Is spring come earlier each year? These and many questions have been answered by scientists studying the natural world. These scientists have been aided but thousands of amateur naturalists who make thousands of observations of the natural world and the wildlife around them. This course will explore the story the study of natural history. Topics will include bird migration, phenology and plant hunters.

Course aim

For centuries people have taken delight in observing the natural world around them. This course will explore the many ways in which citizen scientists help conserve our precious wildlife.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is for beginners

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Name 3 citizen science projects in the UK helping to protect Britain's wildlife
  • List three great amateur scientists who helped explain the mysteries of the natural world
  • Name five species of conservation concern in UK
  • Understand the work of the Wellcome Trust

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
