ICT for Beginners and Improvers

Basic IT course covering a range of commonly used computer skills. Students will learn or improve internet search skills, use of email and how to stay safe online, as well as how to create a range of documents (i.e. letters, flyers, spreadsheets, slide presentations, cards). Exact topics to be decided as a group plus some time to focus on individual goals.

Course aim

Introduce learners to a range of essential computer skills including: using email, the internet, microsoft software and G-suite to create various documents, image editing and online safety.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for beginners
  • This course is for improvers
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Set up and use gmail to send and receive attachments and images.
  • Use the internet to search for information and images.
  • Use Microsoft Office or Google Docs to create different types of document.
  • Insert images into documents & edit using basic tools i.e. copy/ paste, move, resize, crop, rotate, brightness etc.
  • Create a slide presentation about a hobby or interest to show to the group.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • Work outside the class is not required but is beneficial. Your work and handouts will be saved to your google drive (online storage) so you can access your work outside the class so internet access would be useful although work can also be saved to a memory stick if preferred.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • Your progress towards Course learning outcomes and Individual goals will be reviewed and tracked via your student learning record.

What else do I need to know?

  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)

Enrolment Conditions

This course is funded by the West of England Combined Authority but is also open to residents of other areas.

As a registered charity, and to meet our funders’ requirements, we need to check a few things with you before you book. Please could we ask that you check the list below to ensure you meet our basic criteria:

  • You are paying the standard fee (with a credit or debit card) or you are on any of the qualifying benefits
  • You have a valid email address so that you can receive confirmation of your booking
  • You have been resident in the UK, EU or EEA for the last 3 years
  • You are aged 19 years or older on 1st September 2019
  • You have read and accept our standard terms and conditions
