‘Wessex’ is famed for its woods, forests, reclaimed marshlands, watermeadows, rivers, heathlands, grasslands and coast. The Creation and Management of the Wessex Landscape is concerned with the interface between natural resources on the one hand, and human activity on the other.

Course aim

The interactions between human activity and the natural environment will be discussed from the point of view of maintaining the historic landscape of Wessex. This subject matter will be well-illustrated using slides and handouts.

  • This course is for beginners
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • It is aimed at both people who have some basic knowledge of landscape history or ecology and total beginners as basic principles will be explained throughout.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Describe the regional significance of 'Wessex', including appreciation of the landscape that reflect the range of geology, topography, water, soils and climate.
  • Understand the historic basis of the countryside management from prehistory to modern times.
  • Understand how human activity, especially the development of agriculture and mineral exploitation but also defence requirements, ritual, transport, settlement and manufacturing have all affected the landscape of our region.
  • A clear understanding of the nature of 'semi-natural ecosystems', that is historic landscapes created and maintained by people that are so significant in appreciating how past economies affect them.
  • An appreciation of the conservation mechanisms available to preserve and manage the historic landscape of Wessex.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • Bring whatever suits you in terms of note-taking, pen and paper or computer, for example. Handouts of slides and recommended further reading are provided.

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
