Drawing and Painting with colour

From observational drawing of natural forms we will explore elements such as line, tone, proportion and colour through practical activities, relating your work to the work of other artists. We will explore colour theory, including mixing colour mixing from the three primary colours, tints and shades. We will analyse artists' work to understand their intentions and practice to inform your own work. Please bring a sketch book, HB - 2B pencils. Advice on paints to bring after the first session.

Course aim

From observation and analysis of natural forms we will explore drawing and colour theory through practical activities and look at artists to inform your own work.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Accurately map out the proportions of what you see.
  • Understand colour theory, including colour mixing from the three primary colours, tints and shades.
  • Analyse artists' work to understand their intentions and relate their practice to your own work.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • Please bring a sketch book, HB - 2B pencils. Advice on paints to bring after the first session.
