Lawrence of Arabia, everyone has heard the name; but do they know how he achieved this notoriety. Discover how this Welsh Scholar, Archaeologist, self taught Engineer, Writer and Linguist ended up fighting alongside the Arabs in the Middle East during World War 1, and uncover some of his many achievements including how he came to live and die in Dorset in 1935.

Course aim

To provide a brief introduction to T.E. Lawrence's (Lawrence of Arabia's) life, his many and various achievements and to discover where his fame stems from

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Discuss Lawrence's life and why it had such a large impact on history
  • Talk about Lawrence's achievements in History and Literature
  • Better understand some of the complexities surrounding the Middle East and how they still impact on us today

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • This is a short four hour taster course on Lawrence, so initially no records of achievement will be recorded

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • All materials will be provided

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
  • Progress to a longer more detailed course on T. E. Lawrence or Gertrude Bell
