Course aim

To introduce students to French vocabulary and grammar as required in introductions, polite phrases, seeking locations on holiday and ordering drinks and snacks.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is for beginners
  • This course is for anyone interested in learning basic French conversational terms as could be used on holiday in France.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Greet others and say farewell; introduce self and family including nationality and where from
  • Know names of shops/locations and seek directions
  • Use verbs Avoir and Être in enquiring about facilities in a location; describe and compare locations and reply to questions
  • Know some numbers to 60
  • Order a drink or snack in café

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • Revision of work covered in class with occasional written exercises will improve understanding and vocabulary recall. Students will also benefit by listening to the CD while following text in the course book which accompanies the course.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress

What else do I need to know?

  • It would be helpful to obtain the course book "Voilà A French Course for Adult Beginners" also the accompanying 2 CDs. Both will be used in class. The course book and CDs are sold in a pack and will greatly support your learning

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
