Contemporary Art - Part One

With the Turner Prize presenting four finalists all working in the media of film last year, this course takes the opportunity to look at the history and development of film in fine art alongside the cross-over with performance art. We take a more in depth look at various artists working in these two media including Salvador Dali, Andy Warhol and Tracey Emin alongside performance artists including Marina Abramović.

Course aim

To give an introduction to new media in contemporary fine art practice, looking specifically at film and performance art.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • List and briefly describe the work of at least three contemporary fine artists working in film currently.
  • List and briefly describe the work of at least two contemporary fine artists working in performing art.
  • Identify and critically comment on at least two aspects each of the three pieces of film art that will be part of the course.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
