Day School - Gustav Klimt

The study day will look at the work of Gustav Klimt in the context of the Art and Architecture of the Vienna towards the end of the 19th century, in particular Klimt’s involvement in founding the Viennese Secession movement, and the relationship of the Secession to the various manifestations of Art Nouveau across Europe at that time. The day will then look at the so-called ‘Golden Phase’ of Klimt’s career, leading to an exploration of the impact of Klimt’s work on the next generation of Viennese artists, including Egon Schiele and Oskar Kokoschka.

Course aim

The study day will look at the work of Gustav Klimt in the context of the Art and Architecture of the Vienna towards the end of the 19th century.

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Understand the social and historical context of Vienna in the second half of the 19th century.
  • Understand the background to the development of the Viennese Secessionist Movement.
  • Understand the characteristics of the 'Golden Phase' in Klimt's career.
  • Understand the impact of Klimt's work on the next generation of Viennese artists.

How will I be taught?

  • The session will consist of a slideshow, supported by handouts, designed to provoke question and answer sessions and discussions.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
