Robert FitzRoy captained HMS 'Beagle' and carried Darwin around the world. Darwin's collections and research on this voyage led to hi, proposing his ground-breaking theories of evolution. This was to transform Victorian thinking about the origins of humans and other life. This talk provides a lively and vivid illustration of Darwin's and Fitzroy's great adventures, discoveries, their friendship, clashes and controversies. Darwin became the most famous natural scientist in the world and Fitzroy went on to achieve in different fields. Dramatic events on the voyage were reprised in the drama of their two unfolding lives. their successes were played out on a national stage and have resonance today. It changed the whole way we look at ourselves as humans.

Course aim

These talks describe the journey of Captain Robert Fitzroy and Charles Darwin's voyage on HMS Beagle, their friendship, adventures and discoveries.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Give a brief overview of the voyage on HMS Beagle
  • Describe Darwin's collection
  • Explain who Robert FitxRoy was

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion

  • Nothing else is needed
