Literature: The Works of Thomas Hardy

This course will look at a number of novels by the Victorian novelist Thomas Hardy. The course will focus on the cultural, literary and critical context of the work of this Victorian realist writer and consider aspects of his life and legacy.

Course aim

This course will consider a number of novels by the novelist Thomas Hardy.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • demonstrate and awareness and knowledge of the writing of Thomas Hardy.
  • understand some of the social, cultural and historical contexts influencing his writing.
  • be conversant with formal aspects of fiction such as narrative structure, point of view, omniscient and unreliable narrator.
  • participate in class discussion and evaluate primary source material.
  • formulate a response to the studied novels.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor

What else do I need to know?

  • Students will need to have a copy of the appropriate text available to them on the appropriate week. Pens and paper for note taking would also be useful.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • The following novels will be studied: Under the Greenwood Tree; The Return of the Native; The Mayor of Casterbridge; Tess of the d'Urbervilles; Jude the Obscure.
