We will be learning together, simple and very effective techniques to reduce unwanted stress from our lives, and encourage a feeling of better health and well being. We will be using simple massage techniques, based on complementary therapies, that have been used for centuries, suitable and adaptable for all abilities working on the face, scalp, ears, hand and arms. You will be guided very gently by myself at a slow but beneficial pace, through the movements, and with over 20 years of experience as a therapist and an educator working with many NHS trusts and treating many patients, I have a lot of really interesting and helpful information I would like to share with you. My sessions are for anyone and I will enjoy teaching you new skills, develop new ideas that you can put into practice, and share thoughts and ideas with your class colleagues.

Course aim

This course will guide you through some very simple techniques based on complementary therapy practices, that you can use at home on yourself and share with your family.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the WEA organisation, when it was formed and its key principles that encompass all courses.
  • Identify common causes of stress and ideas of how to deal with stress in a more positive way. Have knowledge and understanding of the history, principles and practices of a variety of complementary therapies, reflexology, Indian head massage and Aromatherapy. The practice of Ayurveda, how it is used and being able to identify your own l Dosha, or body type and how that can also benefit your health and well being.
  • Be able to demonstrate a massage to the ears, face, scalp, hands and arms, specifically focusing on reducing stress in our lives stress. Identify how massage works within the body
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the Chakras, the bodies own energy system. Be able to identify how they work, through a practical demonstration and what they control. Be able to follow a guided breathing excercise and the importance of different types of breathing,
  • Identify essential oils used for relaxation and how to use them at home. Be aware of safe practice and the construction and extraction of essential oils. Be able to demonstrate on a hand and arm using either cream or oil

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA’s digital learning platform, Canvas will be used to provide resources or to support lessons, enable assessment, provide learner feedback and for other activities for individuals away from the course.   • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • Your tutor will provide written, text and audio feedback recorded in WEA Canvas, WEA’s digital learning platform.
  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning

What else do I need to know?

  • What you need: You will need an internet connection, speakers, a microphone and a webcam so that you can use our video learning platform, Zoom. If you’d like to understand more Zoom please visit: http://bit.ly/ZoomSpec
  • You will also need access to the internet outside of your sessions. You could do this using a smart phone, tablet, laptop or a desktop computer (at home or through a library etc.).
  • You will need a personal email address to join the WEA’s digital learning platform, Canvas so that you can receive resources, record your progress and achievement and to work with others and share ideas.   • For session 4 your will need a small towel, a cushion and some oil whatever you may have at home, vegetable, sunflower or some massage cream e.g E45. Please don't go to any extra cost; it is so the movements on the hand and arms glide smoothly but you can still do the massage without them.
