The aim of this course is to give students the opportunity to work with freemotion embroidery to capture the illusion of a Landscape . After introductory sessions to produce samples of Textiles using Techniques to include Applique, Chenilling and the use of water Soluable Stabilisers students will work with an experimental approach to capture the feeling of space within a landscape.

Course aim

This is an experimental course to introduce students to a variety of freemotion embroidery techniques to represent the essence of a Landscape.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Freemotion-Embroidery, creating a sample of lines and patterns.
  • Develop your sample using the techniques of Free-Motion Embroidery Applique.
  • Use the Chenilling technique to create Texture.
  • Use Water Soluable Stabilisers to create lace like effects.
  • Produce a Textile piece or a small collection of works using the techniques covered to represent the essence of a landscape.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • Please bring a selection of fabrics, threads, ribbons, lace and beads with you for this course. Also a basic sewing kit consisting of a hand sewing needle, a pair of small scissors, fabric scissors and embroidery hoop.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
