Song of the Birds and The Occasional Nightingale - Part Two

This is Part Two of the course run in October 2019. This half-day school will focus on the late romantic period to the present day. Starting with Brahms and continuing to Dvorak, Elgar, Shostakovich, Messiaen, Tavener, Arvo Part and more besides. We will continue the exploration of the music (solo,chamber and orchestral) and its performers and the circumstances behind the music. This course is open to all. Attendance at Part I is not a pre-requisite.

Course aim

To provide an overview of the classical music written for cello from 1880s to the present day. We will explore the music and its performers and the circumstances behind the creation of the music through CDs and video.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Be able to recognize the sound of the cello and know its general compass.
  • Name at least 5 compositions written for the cello within the romantic and modern periods.
  • Be able to name 3 historical and 2 modern-day performers of the cello.
  • Have a greater awareness of the playing techniques and able to name and describe at least three types.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
