Wellcome to Healthy Towns - Body Condition and Strength

The course is for all adults, regardless of age, fitness levels, capabilities and experience. Exercise routines, varied to suit learners` varying levels of fitness, goals, capabilities and preferences are tailored to each course. Education is included for 30 minutes in each 90 minute lesson, designed to broaden learners` knowledge of the benefits of mental well being, health and fitness. The course will be based around improvements to students understanding of how science in the world around us can help to develop a greater understanding of improvements to our health. Learners will also get a chance to set their own personal goals and strive to achieve these, with help and support of the tutor. The course id fully funded by the Wellcome Trust.

Course aim

The course is designed to gradually increase learners fitness and mental well being levels, and to increase knowledge of the health benefits of becoming fitter and healthier, through exercise instruction and education.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • This course is for people with little spoken English
  • This course is not held in a Womens only centre but is attended only by women.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • To be able to access information and further learning opportunities relating to the work of the Wellcome Trust.
  • Be able to describe what `Healthy Living` means to me.
  • Set personal goals and strive to achieve these, with help and support of the tutor.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • All materials will be provided
  • Clothes suitable for exercise. Trainers or closed toe non-slip shoes. A drink. Have fun!

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
