The physical activity element of the course utilises Gym equipment with practical strength, balance and co-ordination exercises to complete in sessions as well as in the home.Under the theme of Public Health, this course will improve people’s understanding of the science in the world around them to foster a greater understanding of improvements in our health. This course is about sparking students’ interest and engagement so they can debate the course themes amongst themselves, share their learning within the community and take ongoing action in areas that interest them. The course is fully funded by the Wellcome Trust.

Course aim

This Community Gym course is for men only and utilises Gym equipment with practical strength, balance and co-ordination exercises to complete in sessions as well as in the home.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for beginners
  • This course is for improvers
  • This course is for people with little spoken English

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Be able to access information and further learning opportunities relating to the work of the Wellcome Trust.
  • Describe what ‘Healthy Living’ means to me
  • Explain what Health means to me

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • Suitable clothing, footwear and water to drink

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
