This physical activity and health education course is aimed at members of BAMER communities with health conditions such as diabetes, stroke, circulatory disease, arthritis, COPD and related lung conditions, high BMI or who have had a fall or are at a high risk of falling. Beginners, intermediate and advanced level participants are welcome as the exercises are adapted to suit all individuals. This course focuses on students having a basic knowledge and understanding of all the major muscle components and bones of the body. Under the theme of Public Health, this course will improve people’s understanding of the science in the world around them to foster a greater understanding of improvements in our health. This course is about sparking students’ interest and engagement so they can debate the course themes amongst themselves, share their learning within the community and take ongoing action in areas that interest them. The course is fully funded by the Wellcome Trust.

Course aim

Improve health and fitness through the provision of bespoke physical activity and health information sessions tailored to individual needs.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • This course is for people with little spoken English

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Be able to access information and further learning opportunities relating to the work of the Wellcome Trust
  • Describe what ‘Healthy Living’ means to me

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • You will be expected to carry out a range of activities in your own time

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • You will lead a micro teach session weekly demonstrating an exercise correctly to the group.

What else do I need to know?

  • All materials will be provided
  • Medication (inhalers/sprays). List of medication for induction. Suitable clothing such as sports pants/trousers/t-shirt/top. Trainers or closed-toe shoes. Plastic bottle containing water.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
  • Become involved as a volunteer for a WEA partner or another organisation
  • Partake in research on BAMER engagement to shape local service provision
