This course is for students with established sewing and garment making skills who wish to prepare themselves for taking a Level 1 Accredited Sewing course in the summer term. You will practise producing samples for a portfolio and document them with supporting evidence.
Course aim
To develop existing sewing skills to enable students to work on more advanced designs and a number of garments in preparation for sewing accreditation.
Do I need any particular skills or experience?
- This course is for improvers
- Students need to have a minimum level of English language skills to meet the demands of this course. Your tutor will be able to advise you.
By the end of the course I should be able to:
- Identify Health & Safety regulations and risks relating to tools and equipment
- Select appropriate tools and equipment to create Sewing Skills fashion samples
- Cut templates and fabric accurately, for example inserting and making the zip sample
- Demonstrate your practical sewing skills by producing a range of presentation samples
How will I be taught?
- Demonstrations Questions & Answers Observation Activities may include tutor presentation, small group work , class discussions, short tasks and research.
What kind of feedback can I expect?
- You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
- You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
- You will be assessed in class by observation. Your practice portfolio will be assessed against the course syllabus criteria.
What else do I need to know?
- You will need to support your skills by bringing a selection of fabrics samples, zips etc theses can be from recycled items. A list of materials required will be provided at the start of your course. You may be asked to undertake work to support your course outside of the class

- For every hour in class work you will be expected to do 1-hour research
