Sewing for Self Employment

This course will support students as they develop their skills to produce garments of a high standard as a preparation for self-employment in the textile sector. Students will also develop awareness of marketing opportunities such as social media as a means of promoting their work.

Course aim

To utilise previous sewing skills to be able to make more advanced designs and a number of garments.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Identify Health & Safety regulations and risks relating to tools and equipment
  • Select appropriate tools and equipment to create Sewing Skills fashion samples
  • Cut templates and fabric accurately, for example inserting and making the zip sample
  • Demonstrate your practical sewing skills by producing a range of presentation samples
  • Demonstrate awareness of appropriate marketing opportunities

How will I be taught?

  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • You will be expected to carry out a range of activities in your own time
  • Demonstrations Questions & Answers Observation Activities may include tutor presentation, small group work , class discussions, short tasks and research.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be assessed in class by observation

What else do I need to know?

  • You will need to support your skills by bringing a selection of fabrics samples, zips etc theses can be from recycled items. A list of materials required will be provided at the start of your course. You may be asked to undertake work to support your course outside of the class

Enrolment Conditions

This course is funded by the West Midlands Combined Authority but is also open to residents of other areas.

As a registered charity, and to meet our funders’ requirements, we need to check a few things with you before you book. Please could we ask that you check the list below to ensure you meet our basic criteria:

  • You are paying the standard fee (with a credit or debit card) or you are on any of the qualifying benefits
  • You have a valid email address so that you can receive confirmation of your booking
  • You have been resident in the UK, EU or EEA for the last 3 years
  • You are aged 19 years or older on 1st September 2019
