This is a lovely short introductory course of Patterns From Around the World. You'll create your own pattern from what you uncover...very exciting.

Course aim

In this brief Inroduction to Patterns From Around the World course we will look at Patterns from five country's and cultures including; European, Oriental and Asian with a view to identifying them and their country of origin.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is for beginners
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • A willingness to have a go.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Learned a breif cultural history of Patterns From Around the World.
  • Identify materials to create your own patterned tile with card using felt pens.
  • Using the internet on your phones, tablet or laptop learn how to identify, download and print inspirational patterns to create stencils which you can then use for your own tile pieces.
  • Search GOOGLE, or other service provider and Art & Craft books (from the local library), for patterns that interest you. Look at Tiles from around the world...these are a good source of information. We have our very own local producing tile factory in Jackfield.
  • You will be able to identfy patterns from around the world we have looked at, and to place their country of origin. You will create your own unique patterned four or six inch square tile (card tile).

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • The tutor will provide appropriate books to browse for this session. The tutor may also provide brief handouts of information relating to patterns, country of origin and culture.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress
  • Think about collecting ideas of patterns. If you have access to the internet look on GOOGLE for ideas...just key in Patterns from around the World.

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • If you can build up a collection of items; patterned postcards from abroad, decorative papers, photographs, tiles and newspaper and or magazine articles....all of these sorts of imagery will help to inform your experience, knowlege and enjoyment. Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
  • Use your local library Arts & Crafts section to look for books of Patterns From Around the World. If you have access to the internet GOOGLE; Patterns From Around the World.

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
  • Become involved as a volunteer for a WEA partner or another organisation
