Cooking and Kitchen Skills

Students will decide the dish or dishes to be cooked in the following lesson based on available ingredients. Throughout the course, the emphasis will be on healthy and economical recipes, from starters, main courses and desserts; with plenty of opportunity to ask questions and discuss ingredients. There will be a focus on working safely in the kitchen, including food hygiene (how to handle and store cooked and raw foods safely), how to use knives and other kitchen equipment safely and how to source ingredients economically.

Course aim

Improve students' cooking skills through demonstration and participation. Develop students' knowledge of how to prepare healthy and economical meals in a friendly inclusive environment.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Follow procedures for working safely in the kitchen.
  • Measure ingredients accurately and follow a recipe.
  • Understand the principles of kitchen hygiene, and the safe storage of food.
  • Recognise how to shop economically.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • Arrive 10 minutes before the class begins. Bring a kitchen apron

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
