This course is for those who have some experience of creative writing workshops and perhaps attended a few live literature events. We will focus on some of the different approaches to narrative in the novel and the short story. We will also explore ways of constructing stories and spend some time getting to grips with character and how character is revealed in novels and short stories. There will also be opportunity to look at the basic techniques of poetry and how to make vocabulary and imagery more contemporary. We shall identify possible opportunities for students' written and 'performance' work.

  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • Written homework will be set most sessions so students should be prepared to spend at least an hour a week writing/ re-drafting at home.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress

What else do I need to know?

  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • You need to bring a notepad and pen/ pencil or a laptop for writing in class. You also need to bring a positive approach if possible.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources
