Iris Murdoch and the Novel of Ideas: Celebrating 100 Years

This is an illustrated talk giving an overview of Murdoch’s life, and considers the intrusive media coverage after her death that identified her as sexually and emotionally ‘different’. The second half of the talk includes a discussion focused on 'The Sea, The Sea', Murdoch's Booker winning novel.

Course aim

This study day with Professor Anne Rowe gives an overview of the life and work of one of the twentieth century's greatest novelists.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • Some familiarity with Murdoch's novels, especially 'The Sea, The Sea' would be an advantage.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Illustrate extensive knowledge of the life and work of one of the twentieth century’s finest writers and thinkers.
  • Understand how sophisticated ideas are brought into the realms of everyday life and made accessible through the medium of literature
  • Analyse literary texts in a way that will enrich my reading of novels generally.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
  • Some familiarity with Murdoch's novels, especially 'The Sea, The Sea' would be an advantage.
