What is Spanish Art?

Ref: C3127119

In our current global society it is sometimes irrelevant to apply national boundaries to art. However, historically, it still makes sense to examine artwork produced within such a framework. This course sets out to examine how the natural environment, culture, religion and politics of the Spanish region has influenced its art, starting with studies of the caves of Altamira, the influence of the Moorish invasion, and the evolution of Romanesque art and architecture. It will then focus on the impact of Spain's wealth, derived from its plundering of South American cultures, on the religious and court paintings of El Greco, Velazques, Zurbaran, Murillo, and Goya before examining the reasons for the explosion of modern art in the twentieth century starting with the Spanish Impressionist Sorolla and moving on to the world changing art of Picasso, Dali, Juan Gris, Miro and Tapies.
