Cooking Skills

The course will focus on healthy and economical recipes, from starters, main courses and desserts and students will be encouraged to suggest dishes to cook. There will be plenty of opportunities to ask questions and discuss ingredients. There will also be a focus on food hygiene (how to handle and store cooked and raw foods safely), how to use knives safely and how to plan and budget effectively.

Course aim

Improve students' cooking skills through demonstration and participation. Develop students' knowledge of preparation, cooking techniques, and safe storage of raw and cooked food in a friendly inclusive environment

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Demonstrate improved confidence in your cooking skills
  • Follow a recipe.
  • Understand the principles of kitchen hygiene, and the safe storage of food.
  • Use new cooking skills and techniques at home and in the community.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • It's important to arrive 10 minutes before the class begins, please text the tutor if you are unable to attend. Bring a kitchen apron. Wash and sanitise your hands before the lesson starts.
