The Influence of the orient on western classical music. The lure of the east was very much to the fore in the late nineteenth century affecting composers in the choice of opera libretti, word settings, fanciful titles, musical language, rhythms and textures. Music by Bizet, Debussy, Delibes, Holst, Puccini, and Gilbert & Sullivan amongst others will be used as examples.

Course aim

To explore the influence of the orient on western classical music, particularly works from the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century. Operas by Puccini and Bizet, and also instrumental pieces by Debussy are just a few examples.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Have an increased knowledge of the historical and cultural reasons for the oriental influence.
  • Be able to name 5 pieces showing such an influence.
  • Be able to name 5 composers who were directly/indirectly influenced by the orient.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning

What else do I need to know?

  • All materials will be provided

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
  • Become involved as a volunteer for a WEA partner or another organisation
