This workshop is a further chance to explore more of the popular songs and ballads that defined our youth. The focus will be on a selection of four or five popular songs from the swing era. There will be a little learning of vocal technique in order to gain as much individual benefit as possible from a group sing-along session.

Course aim

A further chance to explore more of the popular songs and ballads that defined our youth. The workshop will focus on a selection of four or five popular songs from the swing era.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Understand my vocal ability when singing.
  • Enjoy singing as part of a group.
  • Understand the intricacies of combining poetry and music into songwriting.
  • Relive some past happy memories.
  • Sing with greater confidence.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • A small notebook, pen and pencil will come in handy.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
  • A little research on The swing Era will provide some interesting background detail.

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Join a choir or musical/singing group
