The course will develop existing maths and English skills. It is structured to meet the needs of the students so topics may vary and are subject to change depending upon students requirements but will look at correct use of improving spelling,punctuation and grammar, researching topics and writing in legible text, expressing views in a discussion, understanding metric units, overcoming fear of fractions and percentages and decimals. It focuses upon learning in a relaxed environment and uses practical activities to encourage learning new skills. students may sometimes work in small groups. Students also have the opportunity to use laptops in adjacent library to develop independent learning and research.

Course aim

This course is for students who want to improve their maths and English skills in an informal and friendly environment with lots of support available to help you achieve your goals.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Express my views clearly and join in a discussion
  • carry out independent research and write a short article and present to others
  • Identify and recognise at least 5 common fractions and percentages
  • Identify and recognise metric units for weight, length and capacity
  • Write legibly using correct punctuation

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • All materials will be provided

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
