This course enables students to develop and demonstrate the skills and knowledge required to work or volunteer in an entry-level role within the school workforce. The course directly focuses on supporting the teaching and learning of pupils in primary, secondary, special schools and colleges. Successful completion of the course will enable the student to enroll on the Level 2 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools course.This course will improve your confidence and enable you to plan for a career within the education sector.

This course is funded by Tees Valley Combined Authority. This course is at The Willows Centre, North Port Road, Portrack, Stockton on Tees TS18 2HX. It is a safe and welcome environment.

Course aim

This course aims to enable students to understand the roles and responsibilities of those involved in supporting teaching and learning in schools and provide an opportunity to begin to develop the skills and knowledge required to do this effectively.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • You will need your own personal email address so that you’re able to login to the WEA’s digital learning platform: WEA Canvas.   • Students need a Level 1 qualification in English to join this course
  • The course is aimed at adults aged 19 or over who are interested in becoming a teaching assistant in a school setting

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Explain the different types of schools and their characteristics
  • Confidently discuss the skills and attributes that a T.A. needs.
  • Create a plan for building on my strengths, update my skills and put in place strategies to improve and weaknesses
  • Use Canvas

How will I be taught?

  • Most of your learning will take place in your class, but one or two sessions will be online using WEA’s digital learning platform, Canvas, working by yourself or engaging with other students.   • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • The work that you will do on the introduction can be carried forward to the certification course.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress
  • You will create a portfolio of work to be assessed by your tutor. You will also be assessed at your placement.

What else do I need to know?

  • You will also need access to the internet outside of your sessions. You could do this using a smart phone, tablet, laptop or a desktop computer (at home or through a library etc.).
  • You will need a personal email address to join the WEA’s digital learning platform, Canvas so that you can receive resources, record your progress and achievement and to work with others and share ideas.   • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • You will need an A4 Lever Arch file, paper and pen

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
