Story Sacks

This course is suitable for complete beginners. A story sack can be filled with toys, games, flash cards, puppets and face masks etc. They encourage the love of reading, writing, speaking aloud, maths and creative play. You will explore a variety of creative techniques, including (but not limited to) knitting, crochet, toy and game making. These story sacks will be used in the school with children to encourage reading experiences. There will also be an emphasis on improving your literacy skills through creative activities.

Course aim

Story Sacks are a wonderful way of bringing a book to life for children. A story sack is a large cloth bag with a children's book and supporting material. You will learn how to make all the items that go inside the sack, including props and games.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is for beginners
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • understand what is included in a story sack
  • make some toys, props and games to include in the story sack, using at least 2 different craft skills
  • develop and produce an Activity Sheet with questions and activities based around the book.
  • use at least one recycled or repurposed item in the construction of the story sack or its contents
  • • follow correct Health and Safety practices when using tools and materials.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • All materials will be provided
  • You will encouraged to use a range of recycled materials and items in the story sacks.

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
