Introduction to Supporting Teaching & Learning in Schools

Students will improve their knowledge of the main stages of child and young person development and how it is influenced. Students will learn how to write for assessment and how to build a portfolio of evidence for assessment. You will discuss how to organise a volunteer placement in a school setting which will be required for more advanced courses.

Course aim

This is an introductory course for students who wish to gain the NCFE Level 2 Certificate - Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools with the WEA. It will develop student’s study skills and their ability to reflect on their own practice

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • You will need a good level of English and maths to Level 1.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Describe the main stages of child and young person development
  • Identify the kinds of influences that affect children and young people's development
  • Describe how a learning support practitioner may contribute to the planning, delivery and review of learning activities
  • Identify possible development opportunities relevant to improving own practice
  • Work with an appropriate person to identify own strengths and areas where practice could be improved

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • You will be expected to carry out a range of activities in your own time

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress

What else do I need to know?

  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • You will need an A4 Lever Arch file, paper and pen

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
  • You will need to buy or borrow Supporting Teaching & Learning in Schools Level 2 by Louise Burnham (2019) The Governments website for educational matters is a valuable resource
