This course explores the skills needed to work with young people as well as developing an understanding of what youth work is. By the end of this workshop you will understand some of the key issues involved in working with young people. You will have the opportunity to discuss what will be covered in the follow on course. Developing youth work skills and achieving learning outcomes will enable participants to progress on to voluntary or paid work.

This course is funded by Tees Valley Combined Authority. This course is at The Willows Centre, North Port Road, Portrack, Stockton on Tees TS18 2HX. It is a safe and welcome environment.

Course aim

This course is a taster session to introduce participants to youth work. From this course participants can progress on to the Introduction to Youth Work.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is for beginners
  • This course is for improvers
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • You will need to talk to a member of staff and do a short activity to make sure the course is right for you. For more information and to book an appointment please call 0300 303 3464
  • Anyone wishing to engage in voluntary work within a youth work setting or to be able to communicate effectively with young people

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Identify what youth work is
  • Identify the range of skills required and used by youth workers
  • Identify the three strands of youth work

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • A file to store work, note pad and pen.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
