Practical Art

Ref: C2525567

This course is aimed at those who feel they either want to learn how to draw or paint from scratch, or who have been to other art classes, but feel they've missed some of the important skills or knowledge. You will work on personalised goals and projects to help you achieve this. We do focus on learning specific skills, but we do this in a relaxed atmosphere.

Course aim

To develop key skills in drawing and painting, and to develop a personalised approach to drawing and painting.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • Please note that there will be learners of different abilities on the course - please don't be put off if you come and find someone is really good! All abilities welcome.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Identify what skills and knowledge you need to develop, and plan a project to help this happen
  • Choose an appropriate subject to develop personalised art skills
  • Develop problem solving skills when drawing and painting
  • Demonstrate how to develop drawing skills using appropriate methods
  • Self-assess work against personal goals to identify how to develop skills

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • I use mainly: demonstration, discussion and a lot of 121 help, to help you achieve your personalised goals (which are negotiated with the tutor at the start). The aim is to help you get more independent with your drawing and painting skills

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • The course is split into two approaches - learning a specific set of basic skills (during the initial weeks),and progressing towards your own personalised goals (in the latter part of the course).

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • Initially, you should bring a pencil, eraser and A4 paper. any further materials can be discussed with the tutor. A good attitude, and a willingness to learn are always good!

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • We do like learners to be pro-active in their learning - willing to try and to have a go outside the sessions.

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
