Try these skills then pick one or more to learn in depth later: Rug making, learn to make rugs/wall hangings using traditional techniques and recycled fabric/yarn; Jewellery making, make jewellery, keyrings, and more; Needle Felting, use unspun wool and a felting needle to make animals or flowers; Macramé, knotted plant hangers, bags and belts can be created with decorative string. Buttons, beads & beautiful things, develop useful skills to make anything from bags, jewellery and more. Crafty Upcycling, make useful/decorative items from scrap. You can bring your own reusable items, or choose those available from the tutor. Loom Knitting – knitting looms are provided. Bring some yarn to make a simple hat Crochet – Learn how to read basic crochet terms and follow a simple pattern Toy making – learn how to make a “sock doll”, add its features and hair Marbling 4 Fun – make decorative paper/card

Course aim

Want to learn new craft skills, but not sure what to do, this is the course for you. Experience the basics of one new craft each week. These skills can be used to become self-employed or gain employment within the craft industry.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Identify the principles of 6 key crafts
  • Produce samples of work from the range of taught crafts
  • Produce one completed item
  • Demonstrate safe working practices

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
