This course will enable you to develop and demonstrate the skills and knowledge required to work or volunteer in an entry-level role within the school workforce. The course focuses on supporting the teaching and learning of pupils. There is a requirement for assessment in a real work environment so you must have a placement either as a volunteer or as a member of staff in a learning environment. Successful completion of the course will lead to the Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning through NCFE.

Course aim

This course aims to enable students to understand the roles and responsibilities of those involved in supporting teaching and learning in schools and provide an opportunity to develop the skills and knowledge required to do this effectively.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • You will need your own personal email address so that you’re able to login to the WEA’s digital learning platform: WEA Canvas.   • Students need a Level 1 qualification in English to join this course

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Demonstrate how to support teaching and learning activities
  • Determine how to support student participation and progress
  • Identify the importance of safeguarding, equality and diversity and key legislation
  • Recognise how to work effectively within a team
  • Consider how to support positive behaviour in the classroom

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA’s digital learning platform, Canvas will be used to provide resources or to support lessons, enable assessment, provide learner feedback and for other activities for individuals away from the course.   • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • You will need to undertake a placement in a school environment of a minimum of 50 hours and an additional 50 hours of learning via Canvas, our digital learning platform

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress

What else do I need to know?

  • You will also need access to the internet outside of your sessions. You could do this using a smart phone, tablet, laptop or a desktop computer (at home or through a library etc.).
  • You will need a personal email address to join the WEA’s digital learning platform, Canvas so that you can receive resources, record your progress and achievement and to work with others and share ideas.   • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • You will need an A4 Lever Arch file, paper and pen
