The course aims to encourage students to explore their creativity and interest in art by working in a variety of materials on different topics - which could be their choice or suggested by the tutor - such as using charcoal, acrylic paints , pastels and mixed media to work on portraits, landscapes, abstracts, flowers , still lifes .

Course aim

The course is for people interested in art and artists, art materials and techniques which they can explore in practical sessions with the support of a tutor so that students can continue to develop their ideas and skills in their own time .

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • Students do not need qualifications to join the course - just an interest and curiosity in art, art materials and techniques

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • draw still life compositions in charcoal sketches with improved observation and hand co ordination
  • understand the importance of composition in pictures
  • mix and apply acrylic paints in paintings
  • work with watercolour paints and bring in textures where needed in a landscape
  • use my improved drawing skills in mono prints to develop my awareness of marks and textures

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • Students will work at their own pace and can follow their own interests in art and techniques and topics with tutor support and can bring work in from home to talk about and work on

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • Students are to bring in their own art materials and the tutor will have a range to work with and discuss at every session
