Take away the mystery and add a little magic to watercolour painting. During these ten weeks you will learn the basic techniques and principles behind watercolour painting. The beautiful versatile medium that it is, can cause frustrations for beginners if a few simple rules are not followed. Your tutor will guide you step by step in learning about not just mixing colours and creating successful brush strokes but will also explain the flow of paint and volumes of water required during each stage, Wet in Wet and the range of timings it incorporates in that technique . Both traditional and fun and creative techniques will be covered in the course, so, whatever your style or subject interest and whatever your level of painting this is a good back to basics painting course which will set you up with a better understanding of the medium or a great introduction to painting giving you a good start to learning a beautiful new skill.

Course aim

This course is aimed at beginner level for those new to Watercolour painting, or, for those with a little experience and would like a refresher on the techniques needed for successful painting.

  • This course is open to anyone who has the desire to learn a new therapeutic hobby or a skill that can lead to other course working towards a career in Art.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Know how to choose the right equipment and materials from the huge choices available in art stores for successful watercolour painting.
  • Understand the different types of papers and surfaces used in Watercolour Painting and why and when each one would be used
  • Learn the basic theory behind mixing colours and how using specific colours used in different ways will enhance and improve your painting. Mix useful landscape greens and browns and many shades of grey for stormy skies. With only 3 primary colours you will mix and paint with a 12 colour palette.
  • Learn a few magic painting tricks and techniques to make your application easier, using brushes, sponges, palettes knives and a variety of other household media
  • Practice and learn the basic techniques and skills to carry out a watercolour painting of your own subject choice .

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • You will be expected to carry out a range of activities in your own time
  • You may be asked to do a small amount of research involving internet searches or library searches to gather inspiration for your painting. Guidance will be given by the tutor and resources provided to help with this.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress
  • This is a beginners painting course and no written work is involved other than completion of the Learner Plans. Some reading and picture searches may be required.

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • Brushes and tools can be provided for use in class. Consumable materials such as Paper and paint can be provided by the tutor cost from as little as £2 per session. Help in selecting materials at discount costs can be given. Anyone needing financial assistance should apply to the WEA.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful

  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
  • Become involved as a volunteer for a WEA partner or another organisation
