Throughout history, people have believed in supernatural creatures on the edges of our reality - but what they look like, and what they do, have varied a lot. This course takes in the weird and wonderful inhabitants of the mental world of medieval and early-modern people, with a focus on the north of England, from the Berwick Vampire to the Byland Abbey ghosts, and the mysterious Scottish witchfinder to Mrs Pepper the midwife-witch. Learn how to make a witch bottle, what to say to a vengeful medieval ghost, and how to cure the influence of the fairies. We will inestigate plenty of primary sources, including legal records, medieval chronicles and pamphlet literature.

Course aim

Learn about the ghosts, witches, and other supernatural creatures that people in the north of England 1200-1700 thought lived in their midst.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Describe aspects of the supernatural world as it was understood 1200-1700
  • Understand some of the primary sources used in investigating the supernatural in history
  • Identify some locations in the north east with a supernatural past...

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor

  • All materials will be provided
