The Course aims to develop skills ,ability and understanding of art techniques by working on different subjects and topics in different media, It will be linked in with known art movements, influences and masterpieces -first in oils or acrylics students will learn about compositions in traditional or modern still life Next graphite and charcoal will encourage development of textures and mono chrome mark making by exploring primitive art of different cultures then watercolour work in an atmospheric sea painting will encourage personal creative expression and skills developed will be used in the final topic of interpreting known masterpieces in mixed media

Course aim

The Course is for beginners and experienced students to develop their interest in art and art subjects - with practical guided sessions to encourage observation , drawing and painting skills .

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • Students do not need qualifications or art experience to join the course - just an interest and curiosity in art, art materials and techniques

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • paint a traditional still life -glass, flowers , fruit lace ,- or a composition of subjects of choice - with form and some detail
  • work in charcoal and graphite developing colour and mark control
  • work in water colour paints to make the most of expressive brush strokes and gain control of colour in water
  • analyse and understand and appreciate composition in their own work and famous works
  • relax and develop drawing skills that show personal creativity and interpretation

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • Students will work at their own pace and can follow their own interests in art, techniques, topics with tutor support and can bring work in from home to talk about .

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • Students are expected to bring their own materials to work with and the tutor will have a selection available to talk about quality and choices to new comers

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Students are encouraged to pursue their art skills and are advised of exhibition opportunities to show their work and to see others' art work
