Students will study the foundations of art while either chasing their own subject or following along with a tutor led project. The tutor led projects for this term are self portrait and snow scenes.

Course aim

to provide the foundations of art, while exploring different creative projects. Students will be encouraged to explore the same medium through the term in order to gain familiarity with the material, the colour mixing and the application.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Have studied a master painting and made a note of the marks, colour, tone and/or composition
  • have created a painting in the style of the master copy.
  • and/or chosen own project and topic and chosen own study references and goals in painting eg: realistic horse, Pre-Raphaelite aesthetic, Lino printing

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • Bring materials needed for your medium: eg, oils, OS, suitable painting surface, brushes, palette knives, palette, kitchen roll. I will have spare for most mediums. Sprays for pastel need to be sprayed outside due to the health requirements of the class. Turps is not allowed but tutor has OS

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
