The course is structured to meet the needs of the students. It aims to develop their existing skills and to improve their confidence using these skills through practical activities used on a daily basis. It will involve speaking and listening and to promote conversations and discussions. It will develop reading and writing skills and encourage students to give written responses. It will develop students knowledge of money, shopping, time, weighing and measuring skills

Course aim

To develop students' confidence using English and maths in their day to day life and to enhance their existing life skills

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for beginners
  • You will need to talk to a member of staff and do a short activity to make sure the course is right for you. For more information and to book an appointment please call 0300 303 3464

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Join in a discussion and give my views either verbally or written
  • Identify the coins we use on a daily basis and select items from shopping list
  • Measure objects using a rule and weigh ingredients to make something
  • Use a book ( picture dictionary) and write at least 10 words about a specific topic
  • Tell the time from a clock and recognise different times during the day and use a diary.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress

What else do I need to know?

  • All materials will be provided

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

  • You have a valid email address so that you can receive confirmation of your booking
  • You have been resident in the UK, EU or EEA for the last 3 years
  • You are aged 19 years or older on 1st September 2019
  • You have read and accept our standard terms and conditions
