Beginners Silk Painting

Students will be able to paint on silk using bright dyes that can be fixed with ironing . They will draw up and use their own designs using gutta outliner and explore the possibilities of texture with salt and dry brush techniques for a hanging, cushion cover, suncatcher or a scarf .

Course aim

The course is for students to learn how to draw on silk with gutta outliner and paint with silk dyes then add textures with other materials

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • draw up a simple design for a silk picture
  • outline the design in gutta on silk stretched on a frame
  • colour up the design with mixed dyes for light and dark and bright effects
  • add areas of interest to the design with over painting , added water spots , salt dry brush work, crushed plastic.
  • finish and fix the design by ironing carefully

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • students will work at their own pace to develop the practical skills of drawing and painting silk

What else do I need to know?

  • All materials will be provided
  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • silk material will be provided but students are welcome to bring in personal silk items - scarf or a shirt . to add extra designs to
