Christmas Cake Decorations and Toppers

During the course you will create several decorations that would be suitable for placing on iced Christmas cakes and cupcakes. These decorations will be made from fondant modelling paste, using a variety of food colours and sugarcraft equipment.

Course aim

to provide you with the knowledge to be able to create your own Christmas cake and cupcake decorations, so the can be placed on iced cakes.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • colour fondant icing with specialist food colourings.
  • use correctly sugarcraft modelling tools which are used to create various models for decorating the tops of cakes.
  • understand how to store safely the decorations that have made in class prior to placing them on iced cakes.
  • understand the very basics of handling and using fondant icing
  • understand very basic food hygiene principles for use with cakes

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • you will need to bring with you Ikg of white fondant icing to make the decorations for your cakes. you are welcome to bring 12 cupcakes and some buttercream so you can decorate them in the session, You will need to bring a box to take home your decorations.

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
  • Become involved as a volunteer for a WEA partner or another organisation
