Enjoy making your own mosaic wall decoration in the style of a Victorian Flower Posy. Working in the historic setting of the Donnison School, we will use pretty patterned china and glass to decorate a flower posy shaped wall decoration. Suitable for beginners or improvers, this course will guide you through the skills required to cut, shape and fix your mosaic to create a piece of artwork to treasure or gift. We will learn about and be inspired by the fascinating Victorian use of flowers as symbols for conveying unwritten messages to loved ones.

Course aim

Make your own mosaic wall decoration in the style of a Victorian Flower Posy.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Use mosaic nippers to safely cut china and glass suitable for use in a mosaic.
  • Demonstrate how to fix china and glass tiles to a board.
  • Create one mosaic flower posy wall decoration.
  • Have an understanding of the Victorian use of flowers and their different meanings.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • This will be a practical mosaic making course.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • You are welcome to bring patterned crockery such as plates, saucers etc to use in your mosaic. Chipped or broken pieces can be used as we will cut them into mosaic.
