You will learn how to hold a crochet hook, how to select yarn, correct tension, chain stitch, , double, half treble and treble stitch. You will make a variety of granny squares, and learn how to join them together. You will learn to increase in the round, make handles and decorative edgings, to create a project bag. There will be tutor demonstrations for each stitch to the group and individuals. You will be guided through every stage. You will be given handouts, with instructions and information for each stitch. Practice makes perfect, so a bit of practice between each class will help too.

Course aim

In this beginners crochet course you will learn basic stitches and varieties of granny squares , joining them to create a project bag. You will learn how to read patterns and understand basic crochet instructions.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for beginners

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Hold a hook and tension the yarn, understand basic crochet instructions
  • Make a chain, slip stitch, double, half treble and treble stitch
  • Make a variety of granny squares
  • Join squares
  • Make handles and decorative edging

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • No 5 crochet hook and chunky weight yarn in 3 colours
