This course enables students to develop and demonstrate the skills and knowledge required to work or volunteer in an entry-level role within the school workforce. The course directly focuses on supporting the teaching and learning of pupils in primary, secondary or special schools. There is a requirement for assessment in a real work environment so students must have a placement either as a volunteer or as a member of staff in a learning environment. Successful completion of the course will lead to the award of the Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools through NCFE.

Course aim

This course aims to enable students to understand the roles and responsibilities of those involved in supporting teaching and learning in schools and provide an opportunity to develop the skills and knowledge required to do this effectively.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • Students need a Level 1 qualification in English to join this course
  • This course is for students who attend a specific centre only. For more information please call 0300 303 3464
  • The course is aimed at adults aged 19 or over who are interested in becoming a teaching assistant in a school setting You will need an English and maths qualifications at Level 1 and be working towards Level 2

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Support teaching and learning activities
  • Observe and report on learner participation and progress
  • Obtain copies of legislation guidelines from the placement for Health and Safety; Confidentiality and Equal Opportunities
  • Describe how to interact and respond to adults and children
  • Make a small school display

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • You will need to undertake a placement in a school environment of a minimum of 50 hours

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress

What else do I need to know?

  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • You will need an A4 Lever Arch file, paper and pen

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
