Silk Painting Taster

Students will learn about colour work on silk, exploring different techniques that give texture and interest . They will develop their own ideas and designs that can be drawn and coloured up on silk with control and detail using gutta outlines for hangings , scarves, cushions etc work .

Course aim

The silk painting course will introduce the techniques of painting on real silks of different qualities leading to designing and colouring a scarf

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • work my own design on silk with gutta outline
  • colour up my own design to give form with light and bright and dark areas
  • pin out silk on a frame to give good tension for controlled painting
  • bring texture and detail to designs using salt and clear water drops
  • fix the colours with heat to make them permanent

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • this is a practical session where students will work with silk and silk painting materials from the start to develop understanding of skills involved

What else do I need to know?

  • All materials will be provided
  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
