Sewing - Dress Making/Alterations

This course is for all levels of experience, you will complete weekly tasks that you will then incorporate into your own projects. You can make either garments for yourself or your family. Or if you prefer you can make soft furnishings for your home. You will be supported by a friendly group of students who are on their own learning journey. This course could lead to a range of job opportunities or self employment within the textile and fashion industry.

Additional information about this course

This course is funded by Tees Valley Combined Authority. To enrol on this course you will need to attend the Tees Valley Women’s Centre enrolment day on 6th September. At the centre you will be able to enrol on your course by phone or the internet. If you are unable to attend the enrolment day you must contact Donna Middleton 01642 296166, after the 6th September, who will provide you with a pin number which will enable you to enrol if there are places available.

Course aim

The main purpose of this course is for students to make a garment of their choice and to build on their existing skills

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • This course is for women only as it is held in a women's centre

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Maintain your sewing machine
  • Use a pattern
  • Demonstrate sizing and measuring skills
  • Undertake pattern cutting and create your own garments
  • Identify how to choose suitable fabrics for fashion styles

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • You’ll need a basic sewing kit and a project of your choice

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
