This course is designed to give you the confidence to make clothes or soft furnishings for friends and family. During this course, you will learn how to sew using professional techniques, alongside creating a varied portfolio of sewing samples and finishing techniques. This course is all about fun and creativity. You will work with a range of fabrics while focussing on sewing, seams, hems and much more. You will also look at different aspects of sewing and garment construction. This course is suitable for absolute beginners but also those with some experience. Skills include dress making and tailoring. Examples of some previous articles created include: Roman blinds; curtains and cushions. This course could lead to a range of job opportunities or self employment within the textile and fashion industry

Additional information about this course

This course is funded by Tees Valley Combined Authority. To enrol on this course you will need to attend the Tees Valley Women’s Centre enrolment day on 6th September. At the centre you will be able to enrol on your course by phone or the internet. If you are unable to attend the enrolment day you must contact Donna Middleton 01642 296166, after the 6th September, who will provide you with a pin number which will enable you to enrol if there are places available.

Course aim

The main purpose of this course is for students to make a garment of their choice and to build on their existing skills

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • This course is for women only as it is held in a women's centre

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Identify how to how to use a sewing machine or maintain your sewing machine
  • Identify how to adapt a pattern to fit
  • Using different attachments on your sewing machine
  • Undertake pattern cutting and assembling garments
  • Create your very own garments or home furnishings

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • A basic sewing kit, scissors, pins, needles, tailors chalk, and a project of your choice

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
